How do you circulate portable games?

All those tiny games, but no cases to put them in. How do you keep them secure? It took us a while, but you know when you stare at something long enough, it’s time for fresh eyes. Robert Slater took one look at our problem, and came up with a solution, a pretty good one, too.

PSP Games
Once you see how we did this one, you’ll know how to do the rest. Basically, all there is to it, is you need to use the original casing for the PSP, and incorporate it into the security cases you have. Someone has already gone through all the trouble of molding that plastic to fit a game, so why re-invent the wheel? Just cut the molded plastic out of the old case, and put it into the new one.

The PSP is pretty easy, so that’s why we started with it. The case is almost the same height as a regular DVD. If you cut along the seem like shown in the picture below, then trim off the extra plastic that would go over the cover art, then you have a little molded plastic that will fit right into many regular DVD cases. Our DVD cases even have a little clip for the extra material that comes with DVDs that we slid our PSP part into. We are also putting a security strip between the old case and the new one, then gluing the two together to keep it secure. The security gates did pick up the strip from between the two case pieces when we tested it.

That’s really all there is to it. We have some pictures below to help illustrate how this is done. The rest of the processing is up to you. Though, I would not recommend putting any stickers on the actual games. They slide into the game players very snugly, and the stickers could jam up the player. We use fine point Sharpies to write any information we want on the game. With the DS this is a problem, but the PSP has more room for you to write on.

Nintendo DS and Advance Processing
The DS is processed very similarly to the PSP. The plastic of the DS case is very tough though, so make sure you have something strong enough to cut it cleanly. The DS case also comes with a place for a Nintendo Advance game. Use that part to process any Advance game you may want to include in your collection.

We have researched the media that DS games are stored on, and it turns out they are flash memory based. That means theoretically the magnet should not hurt them in the demagnetizing process. If you use RFID, then you don’t need to worry about that.

The DS is very small, so you may have trouble finding a place to put any identifying stickers on it. Just write on it using a fine line Sharpie if you need to put your info on it. You’ll likely want someone with small, tidy handwriting to do that for you. See the pictures below for more information.
